Red oak and white oak
Red oak has open pores and a pinkish tone. White oak is tighter, tan to olive, and its closed pores make it the one for outdoor furniture, boats and barrels. Quartersawn white oak shows the ray fleck that Arts & Crafts furniture is known for.
Why oak dries slowly
Oak is dense and checks easily if it’s rushed. White oak in particular dries slowly and gently, and never as hot as pine. That’s one reason we run hardwood loads separately: the whole load moves at the pace of its slowest wood.
