Pine, dried hot

Pine is full of pitch, and pitch gums up planer knives and bleeds through finish. We run pine loads hot, up to about 160°F, which drives the moisture out fast and sets the pitch so the boards plane clean. Four-quarter pine takes about 8 days in the kiln. Bring it green.

Hemlock for timbers

Hemlock is stiff, holds a nail and is plentiful here, which is why so many old barns are framed in it. We saw it to order for beams, posts, rafters and timber-frame projects.

Work it out

How much wood have you got, and what will it cost to dry?

Measure a board, get its board feet, then see what a run through the kiln comes to.

96 in × 12 in × 1 in ÷ 144 = 8 board feet. For live-edge slabs, measure the width at the narrow end.
